TTT Books I Loved But Never Reviewed

Top Ten Tuesday used to be a weekly post hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, but was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl. “It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.” This is definitely something I can understand and want to participate in.

This week’s topic is a tough one for me — books I loved but never reviewed. I’ve been doing a lot of reading lately, and reviewing all the books I’ve read recently. So for this list, I’ve really had to dig deep and think about books that I’ve really loved from before my book reviewing days.

1. Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley — the King Arthur story told by the women involved, who were more than just arm candy? Definitely worth a read, and it’s one of my faves that I’ve reread a bunch of times.

2. Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin — I love the series (even if it’s unlikely to be completed anytime in the next decade or two). It’s another one that I’ve been able to read so many times and always catch something new that I didn’t pick up on.

3. Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert — I read this one years and years ago, and it was such a great book. I loved the message, the story, the characters, and the setting. It was one of those super-hyped books but it was so worthy of the hype!

4. The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan — I remember reading this in my teens and being so enchanted not just by the family dynamics but also by learning so much about a culture that was so different from my own. Amy Tan is an incredibly talented writer that made me interested in reading more books by her and other OwnVoices writers before OwnVoices was even a term.

5. The Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean M. Auel — reading this book (and the rest of the series) was my introduction to historical fiction, romance, and sweeping epic sagas, which brought distant history forward and made it feel so tangible. I loved how incredibly detailed the story was and how relatable and imperfect the characters were.

6. Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris — I didn’t read this until after I had seen the show True Blood, but unsurprisingly, I loved the book more than the show. It’s been a really long time since I read these books, but I remember them being really intriguing and the characters were so well-drawn.

7. Pieces of Her by Karin Slaughter — this was the first Karin Slaughter book I ever read, but I knew it wouldn’t be the last. She is a freaking master of suspense and plot twists and action and if you haven’t read one of her books, but like psychological thrillers, you really should just suck it up and read one already!

8. Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay — have you ever watched the show Dexter? If you have and enjoyed it, you really need to check out this series, because it’s WAY better than the show. It’s darkly funny, terribly creepy, even scary at times, and a great series that I even braved the scary parts to read. Yeah, it’s THAT good.

9. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini — this was such an incredibly moving and powerful book. The characters, the storyline, the setting, everything was just *chef’s kiss* and if you haven’t read it, you totally should. Just beware of the trigger warnings.

10. The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende — I’m usually not a huge fan of magical realism, but this book completely changed my mind about the genre. I loved the characters, the setting, and all the family drama. It’s definitely a book I plan to reread more than once.

    • It’s been so long since the last book came out I’m definitely going to have to reread if Winds of Winter is ever released! I’m losing hope though, since it’s been 9 years with not even an expected date 😫

  3. I didn’t review THE CLAN OF THE CAVE BEARS either. What would I say? Sometimes I just can’t seem to make myself write a review about a book that I love. I wonder now if it is that I am afraid that my review won’t live up to the book itself. Here is my TTT list

  9. Oh my, your list only adds on to the list that I’ve already made today. I really haven’t reviewed SO many titles I read prior to blogging and really getting into reviewing. I really wish that I had done more if it earlier 😂 I loved The Kite Runner (heartbreak central!) and I also really enjoyed GoT too!

    • Right? I never even thought about reviewing back when I read these books! But maybe someday I’ll review them after a reread, even if my heart can’t handle a reread of The Kite Runner.

  11. I love The Clan of the Cave Bear! I was obsessed with the series in high school, and even though I have found things to cringe at and make fun of in the later books, I still un-ironically love the first one for all its sweeping, epic, bittersweet goodness.
