PART ONE: BEGINNING OF THE YEAR

• A book you were really excited for

Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse was one of the books (among many) that I was super excited about.

• A book that started out really well

Take a Hint, Dani Brown by Talia Hibbert. It starts with a scene full of Dani’s humor, and I just loved her personality, and it only got better from there.

PART TWO: THE WORLD GOES ON HOLD

• A book that had an unexpected plot twist

Golden Son by Pierce Brown. I could never quite figure out anything that was going to happen next, all of the plot twists were so unexpected!

• A book where you felt like nothing happened

The Stars and the Blackness Between Them by Junauda Petrus. For a book that was supposed to be a romance, there wasn’t even a HINT of romance until 70% of the way in, and neither character acted on it until the book was nearly over. It just felt like I was reading forever.

• A book where two main characters were separated

Dragonfly in Amber by Diana Gabaldon. I loved this series, and Claire and Jamie being separated was so painful!

PART THREE: THE WORLD TRIES TO REOPEN (AND BEGINS A SECOND WAVE OF THE PANDEMIC)

• A book in which the characters made a bad decision

Don’t all books involve characters making bad decisions? I guess I’d have to say Lord of Shadows by Cassandra Clare, since I just finished reading it and seriously, all of the characters make bad decisions at least once during the book.

• A book with an impatient/overly eager character

These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong. Tyler was definitely too overeager, and he was also such a jerk! But the book was so good!

PART FOUR: THE WORLD ADJUSTS (SORT OF)

• A book in which the character’s goals change midway

Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid. I loved seeing Emira’s goal changing over the course of the story.

PART FIVE: THE END & LOOKING FORWARDS

• A book whose sequel you really anticipated/are anticipating

Kingdom of the Wicked by Kerri Maniscalco. I have to know what happens next!

• A book whose sequel was better than the original

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas. The first book was my least favorite in the series (even though it was still good), and I found that I liked each additional book more.

• A book you read just to finish it (didn’t like it but wanted to finish anyway)

The Librarian of Auschwitz by Antonio Iturbe. I had to read this to lead a book club discussion, but it was awful. The author also misappropriated and misrepresented Jewish culture and religious customs, which may not be readily apparent to people who aren’t familiar with them.
