Top Ten Tuesday used to be a weekly post hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, but was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl. “It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.” This is definitely something I can understand and want to participate in.
While there’s something to be said for reading a book by one of my favorite authors. I already know that if I pick up one of their books, that I’m going to love how they write and the kind of stories that they create. But there’s also the unique joy that comes with reading a book by an author who is new-to-me, and finding a new potential favorite. I’m really loving these 2023 recap post topics, by the way! Here are some of my favorite new-to-me authors that I discovered in 2023:

- H.G. Parry — The Magician’s Daughter made me realize I was missing out, but I haven’t had the time to get around to reading her other book.
- Deepti Kapoor — This debut author knocked my socks off with Age of Vice, and I can’t wait to see what else she comes up with in the future.
- Dani Shapiro — Signal Fires was one of those books that was suggested to me, and it was one of those reads that I still think about from time to time.
- Abby Jimenez — I’m picky about romances, but Yours Truly had me cracking up and adding her entire backlist to my TBR immediately.
- Cherie Dimaline — VenCo was my first Dimaline book, but it won’t be my last. I already bought another book, and am looking to squeeze it into my monthly TBR as soon as I can.
- Rebecca Makkai — I Have Some Questions for You was a really cool story, but I also liked the unique way that Makkai structured the story to make it as intriguing as possible.
- Richard Swan — The Justice of Kings was one of those fantasy novels that pulled me in during the very first chapter and still hasn’t let go. I’m reading the final book in the trilogy and still just as amazed as I was during the very first chapter.
- Liane Moriarty — She gets a lot of hype, but when I read What Alice Forgot for a PopSugar prompt, it was my first time reading one of her books. I was so impressed the way that she crafted this narrative. I’m absolutely going to be reading more of her books.
- Melissa Albert — Our Crooked Hearts was so creepy and wonderful and dark that it motivated me to add her other books to my TBR. I’m pretty excited about an ARC of her new book.
- Helene Wecker — I read The Golem and the Jinni as a buddy read, and fell in love with the way that Wecker told this story. I think 2024 is the year that we finish this series.
Have you read any of these? What do you think of them? What are some of your favorite new-to-you authors from 2023?

I need more books by Helene Wecker in my life, her style is so pretty, emotional and atmospheric

I know! She has this unique and wonderful style that I automatically want more of. It automatically just transports me right to the setting without me even realizing it.

I’ve read several of Liane Morriarty’s books and I liked the one better than the other. If you like Liane, you might also enjoy her sister Nicola’s work. I’ve read Hazelwood by Melissa Albert and wasn’t that impressed unfortunately.

I didn’t know Liane Moriarty had a sister who was an author also – talk about sibling rivalry! I haven’t read The Hazel Wood, but Our Crooked Hearts was really good, and I have high hopes for The Bad Ones.

VenCo was one of my favorite books of the year, and I also added more Dimaline to my TBR after reading it. I hope you continue to enjoy these authors in 2024!

Thank you! I try to read from a diverse blend of genres, although fantasy usually wins out as most heavily read genre.

Mystery I think tends to come out more for me 🤔 then Romance.

I love Jimenez! I am so happy you found her books!

I had heard some good things about her beforehand, but she was actually way better than I had expected. A great rom-com is an easy 5 star read for me, so I’m a huge fan now.

Great list of books!! The Golem series is one that I own and yet to start. I’m glad to see it on this list!

The first book is really great – I read it with Becky, but we totally slept on book 2. I think you’ll like the layered mythology of both Jewish and Arab cultures over the historical fiction aspct.

I’ve heard really excellent things about Abby Jimenez’s books. Cool story, she’s from my hometown. Kind of a cool fact…at least I think so. 😉

Oh that’s really cool! If you haven’t read one, you should. She writes an amazing rom-com!

Which book should I read first? Just her first book? What would you recommend?

The only one of hers that I’ve read so far is Yours Truly, so I’d suggest starting with that like I did!

I HAVE SOME QUESTIONS FOR YOU is one I meant to read last year and just didn’t get to. Maybe this year! I have read a book by Shapiro, but it was her memoir about finding out the man she thought was her father wasn’t. It was super interesting.
Happy TTT!

I got an early release audiobook version of I Have Some Questions For You, and really liked how it was structured. And that book by Shapiro that you read sounds so interesting – I’m going to have to find a copy of that memoir.

I love Cherie Dimaline’s books, too! I’ve read The Marrow Thieves and her remixed version of The Secret Garden, Into the Bright Open. I’ll have to check out VenCo. I haven’t read Melissa Albert *yet*, but I have a couple of her books, and I would really like to read them this year. Great list!

Thank you! I love how our taste is close, but doesn’t quite overlap – looks like I’ve got a lot of Dimaline’s backlist to work through, so that’s welcome news. And there are a few more of Albert’s books that I’m looking forward to.

I’ve herd so much about Liane’s and Abby’s books, but never read anything by either one! Pretty sure the “biggest” author I finally read in 2023 was probably Taylor Jenkins Reid, and hopefully in 2024, I’ll try some more new authors, too! Thanks so much for visiting my website this week, Leah!
