Top Ten Tuesday used to be a weekly post hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, but was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl. “It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.” This is definitely something I can understand and want to participate in.
This week’s prompt is reading goals I still want to accomplish before the end of the year. Just a note – I’m on vacation this week, so feel free to leave comments, but I probably won’t be able to get to them until I get home. So bear with me!
I’m going with the suggestion of following up on the bookish goals that I made in January of this year. Here’s the goals I made and how they’re going:
- Read more nonfiction books. In January, I said I wanted to read at least 3 a month. I didn’t quite read 3 each month, but I read more some months and less others, and it totals out to 31 as of the end of September. So I’m on track so far to complete this one.
- Increase the diversity of my reading. In January, I said that I wanted to read more books by and about marginalized groups. So far it looks like I still need to work on my diversity a bit:
- 33% of books I read were by BIPOC authors, and 37% of books featured a BIPOC MC. Those include Black, Asian, Pacific Islander, Latine, Yazidi, Persian, Indigenous, and SWANA authors.
- 16% of books I read were by LGBTQIA+ authors, and 24% featured an LGBTQIA+ MC.
- 10% of books I read were written by Jewish authors.
- Branch out into different genres. In January, I wanted to try reading one book from a different genre than usual each month. So far, I’m rocking this one! I’ve read classics, horror, sci-fi, social science, science and nature, self-help/inspirational, paranormal/new age, history/war, true crime, social justice, travel/food, and science/medicine.
- Read more books than last year. This was a stretch goal in January, and it turns out I’m just not that flexible this year. I’m at a total of 271 as of September 29, and it doesn’t seem feasible to get to 505 unless I switch to all graphic novels or picture books so I’m giving up on this one.
- Complete the three challenges that I committed to—the 2023 PopSugar Challenge, the 12 in 12 challenge, the 18 Jewish Books by Jewish Authors Challenge.
- I’ve completed 44 out of the 50 prompts in the PopSugar Challenge, leaving me at 88% complete (thank you StoryGraph so I don’t have to math).
- I’ve read 7 of the 12 books recommended to me in the 12 in 12 challenge, and one of the books isn’t available, so I have 4 more books to read in 3 months.
- I completed the 18 books by Jewish Authors challenge.
- Read more of the books that I own. In January, I said that I wanted to read at least 1-2 books from my own collection each month. I am sucking at this one. I have read maybe four of my own books this year?
- Keep my ARCs at a manageable level. I am failing miserably at this goal too, although I think that if I keep focused, I can turn it around in the last three months of the year.
How did you do with your January bookish goals?

I’m on a reading challenge and this month is about reading non-fiction, I’m still looking for what to read, because it must have also been published before 1970

Oh man, finding a non-fiction before 1970 that’s also an interesting one has got to be tough!

Right? Non-fiction, I usually only read biographies about historical persons but modern written 😀

True crime is usually an interesting read too.

My goal was to read at least one more book than last year, and it looks like I’m going to do it! Last year, I read 17. I’ve already read 14 books this year, and I’m on a roll! So I think it’s going to happen.

Nice! You’re definitely on track to beat last years number, and I love that goal idea!

Those new books are so tempting, but you’ve had some great accomplishments this year. Hope you enjoy the rest of your reading year.

Thanks! I really did make some great progress on my goals, so thanks for making me feel better and not looking at the goals that I’m far from reaching.

Even with the ARCs it sounds like you’re going a great job of accomplishing most of your goals. Sometimes we have to give ourselves a little grace on this stuff because it’s so hard!

You’re so right! I’ve been looking at the goals I’m not doing so well at, instead of looking at the ones I’m crushing. Someone else pointed that out, and it makes me feel so much better! Thank you for that.

271 books read?? How did you do that? Amazing! My yearly goal is always 200, which it looks like I’ll meet and exceed but probably not by too much. Tell me your secrets, reading Yoda!
Nice job on your goals. I’m just about done with the POPSUGAR one too. I’ve never completed it before, so I’m excited to only have two prompts left to complete.
Happy TTT!

I’m a fast reader, but I actually wrote a post about how to crush your reading goals! I think my biggest secret is that I almost always have three books going at a time – an audiobook, an ebook, and a physical book. All in different genres, of course, or I’ll get everything totally confused.
Thanks – the PopSugar one this year is giving me a tough time on a couple of prompts. But I’m sure we can complete it! Sorry for the late response, but I was away on vacation.

Hope you are able to achieve all your goals. I probably need to add more diversity to my reading.

I made some effort last year, but really put a lot of work into it this year. It’s totally worth the effort – diverse books are awesome!

I struggle with keeping my ARCs under control. Who doesn’t want to read all the new shiny books? I started the year pretty strong, but I don’t know what happened, as I have 5 ARCs for October alone! I’m hoping to stay firm on that next year, as my bookshelf is overflowing with books I want to read.

Having all of these ARCs is definitely motivating me to request less. Now to set aside more time in my day to read undisturbed …

I tried to read my non-fiction, but I just didn’t find anything I wanted to read. So, I failed that goal. 🤷♀️

I’ve been lucky with the non-fiction books that I’ve found – some of them read like fiction!

That’s the best when non-fiction reads engagingly like fiction!

I wanted to read more nonfiction too! I’m not sure if I accomplished my goal. I don’t remember how much nonfiction I read last year.

I’ve been tracking it, so that helps a lot. I started reading more non-fiction last year, but really made it a priority this year.
