You know how it feels when you find the most amazing item ever, and you want to share it with the world? Well, I got to thinking and figured that I can have this be a blog feature every now and then. When I find a good crop of products, I figured that I can share links to them in the hopes that I can help people find something useful that I can’t live without.
The idea for this came about when I was talking to a friend of mine who also has chronic illness, and we both had things to share that the other person didn’t know about. Having a mother with various mobility and joint problems also gives me some good insight into what products are available, and I see what she relies on the most. This means that I’m going to talk about adaptive devices, or items that help people with disabilities maintain as much independence as possible. But their use isn’t limited to people who have disabilities, and can be helpful to people who are able-bodied as well.

Book Holders. I have arthritis that affects my hands at times, and on those days, I know better than to even try to hold a book. Before I got one of these, I’d have to switch to an audiobook or my iPad, because simply holding a book in my hands was too painful to do. Now, I can use it when I’m unable to hold a book as well as when I’m trying to transcribe something or write a review from notes, cooking a recipe, or just have my hands busy doing something else. It also comes in a lot of pretty colors.

Over the Ear Wireless Earbuds. Everyone and their mother has earbuds, and I had yet to find a single pair that has worked for me until I discovered these. There’s just something about my ear canals that had regular earbuds constantly sliding out, but these go around the top of your ear and then into the ear canal, kind of like modern hearing aids. They’re noise-cancelling, and when I have these in, I literally can’t hear anything in the same room unless it’s shouted. I was impressed to discover how well these fit and stay put, and they’re a must when I’m listening to steamy romance scenes! Plus, I’ve had these since December and only had to charge them twice.

Lotion Applicator. I decided to start with this one because this is so useful, and it is one of those items that anyone can benefit from. Have you ever tried to put lotion onto your own back? It’s basically impossible unless you’re a contortionist. So I looked for something that can help me put a lotion on my back. It comes with four reusable foam-type applicators that fit onto a nicely curved wooden handle with grips, and it is easy to use. This is something I can use whether I’m at the beach and need some sunscreen on my back, or if I just don’t like the feeling of lotion on my hands.

Foot Petals Insole Cushions. My mom introduced me to these, and they are like walking on a cloud. I’ve got super high arches, and these cushion the toe and heel while providing good support to my arches. They’re also especially good if you aren’t able to get a good grip on your shoes and can’t prevent sliding.

Motivational Glass Water Bottle with Silicone Sleeve, Handle and Phone Holder. This one has been a serious lifesaver for me. I have POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome) and have to drink ~3 liters of water a day (doctor’s instructions). Since I also have to add electrolytes, I was looking for a bottle that I could shake and clean easily, and preferably one with a straw. Luckily this one comes as close as I could ask for. It’s glass with a silicone sleeve to protect the 64 oz. bottle, it has both a straw and a larger opening to drink out of, and the handle has this super cool notch in it that lets me put my phone there so I can see it and don’t forget about it. Extra bonus is that there’s a 10% off coupon!

Pure Kick Hydration Packets. Another recommendation from my doctor was to include electrolyte packets to all water I drink. I’ve tried a few different brands, but have found my favorite in Pure Kick. I’ve tried the strawberry watermelon which is a nice mild flavor if you don’t like the flavor to overwhelm you, and the grape is another favorite. There are pitcher-sized packs and energy packets too. Pro-tip: If you mix these with alcohol, it hydrates you while you drink and lowers the risk of a hangover.

Long Handled Three-in-One Shower Set. As my mother ages, I try to find ways to help her without her needing to ask, so I can help her to maintain as much independence as possible. She’s got problems with both shoulders, and can’t lift her hands above shoulder height, and even that is difficult for her. She has other mobility challenges, so this was perfect for her. It comes with a long, folding handle, and on the end you can affix a sponge, a soft-bristled shower brush, or a pumice stone. While I initially got this to make her life easier, I realized that it allows her to retain her dignity.

What are some adaptive tools that you can’t live without?

My hearing aids work as the most expensive earbuds available. LOL! But I really do like that they function that way. I really like the lotion applicator. That’s very useful.

That’s such a wonderful way to look at them! My dad would turn his hearing aids off if we were talking too much and he didn’t want to hear it 🤣
Originally, I figured I’d give my mother two pads and keep two for myself so we could share the lotion applicator, but then I realized it would be more convenient if we each had our own. I also hate the sensation of having lotion on my hands, so now I can avoid the problem altogether while still being able to use lotion.
