Sunday Bookish Discussion — Comfort Reads

It just feels like there is so much going on in my life. The antibiotics for my mother weren’t working, so the hospital switched her to a more aggressive antibiotic. In the meantime, she hasn’t been here, and for the first time that I can ever recall, we won’t be having the Passover seders at our house. I would have tried to do the cooking, but all of the recipes are in my mother’s head, and all I’m really confident in being able to make is the matzah balls, which I’ve been making for as long as I can remember.

How cute are these shoes?

My Achilles is healed enough that I’m out of the boot, but I wound up finding this super-cute sneakers with a 2″ platform heel (see above), making these the perfect transition from the 3″ lifts I had before. You can find these shoes here. I can also drive, but haven’t been able to drive far enough so that I can visit my mom at the hospital. I’m so used to seeing her every day that her absence feels especially marked, and on a holiday, no less. Fingers crossed and prayers/good vibes/well wishes are being accepted for her, if you’d like.

And I got to thinking…just like so much of the Passover holiday is made up of comfort foods, maybe it’s the right time to talk about comfort reads. You know, those books that you can turn to and no matter how many times you read them, it’s going to be the perfect escape that you need.

I have a couple of books that I’ve reread time and time again, and always find something new to take away from the reading, which I hadn’t noticed in prior readings. When I’m having a really hard time and can’t seem to find a book I want to read, there are certain books that I know I can always turn to and find the escape I’m looking for.

While some people turn to their favorites regularly, I know that not everyone does this, and I’m curious what you do when looking for your escape from life if it gets to be too much, or when you aren’t finding any books that are a good fit for you at the time.

Thinking outside of the bookish box, we turn to comfort foods, comfort shows or movies, or other ways to help ourselves feel better when we aren’t feeling so great. There are certain movies or shows that I will always watch if they are on, or that bring up nostalgia for me. Other things I turn to are clothes—when I’m feeling sick or sad or whatever feeling I don’t like, I find myself wearing my most comfortable clothes. Whether that is a favorite hoodie, pair of pants, or even fun slippers.

Do you have comfort reads? If not, how do you escape and feel a little better?

  1. I’m sorry to hear that your mother’s antibiotics weren’t working. I hope she’s tolerating the stronger one well. That’s a shame about the holiday. I do hope you were able to be with friends or family. The sneakers are super cute! I don’t turn to a specific book but to a sub-genre. I’m sure you can guess that it’s Amish romance without me saying it. It really seems to do so much for me. It’s rather odd but I don’t question it.

    • Thank you! Those sneakers were so comfy I actually had to buy a second pair in a different color. Everybody loves them.

Well, we found out that it isn’t cellulitis, and she’s actually coming home today. My brother had me come to his house, since he and his girlfriend live super close, and had a Seder. It was a really nice dinner and even better company.

I’m not surprised at all to hear that Amish romance is your type of comfort read. I love this for you, and I think it’s wonderful to find that specific book or type of book that hits the spot when nothing else works.

      • I’m so glad to hear your mother is coming home today. I know that it must have been difficult for all of you with her in the hospital. I hope you both continue to improve health wise!

      • It was tough, and I was so happy to hear that she was coming home today. She’s sleeping nice and comfortable in her own bed. Hospitals are so not restful. But it’s all up from here!

  2. That is a cute sneaker! I hope you’ll be able to see your mom again soon. It’s so hard when parents have health problems.

Rereads are my comfort reads. I like knowing what’s going to happen and not having any surprises.

    • Thank you so much! They are so comfortable I had to get another pair.

My brother picked me up and we both spent the whole afternoon with my mother, so it was great to see her. But more importantly, she’s coming home today!

There’s something so great about a book where you have read it enough times to have half of it memorized. It’s like cuddling up under a warm throw blanket right out of the dryer.
