Top Ten Tuesday

TTT – Books With One-Word Titles

Top Ten Tuesday used to be a weekly post hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, but was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl. “It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.” This is definitely something I can understand and want to participate in.

This week’s prompt was submitted by Angela @ Reading Frenzy Book Blog, and it’s books with one-word titles. It’s finally starting to look like we’re moving on from the “A ____ of ____ and ____” book title trend, and while I don’t think we’re going to have a one-word title trend yet, there have been some really amazing books with one-word titles. Here’s some of my favorites:

  1. Babel by R.F. Kuang — if you haven’t heard of this one, I don’t know where you’ve been for the last six months, but check it out.
  2. Vicious by V.E. Schwab — this fantasy turns the idea of heroes and villains on their head with a cast of morally gray characters.
  3. Belladonna by Adalyn Grace — a girl who is impervious to Death is the basis for this YA fantasy.
  4. Chlorine by Jade Song — this coming-of-age/horror novel worked it’s way into my brain and is currently taking up space rent-free.
  5. VenCo by Cherie Dimaline — this fantasy centers around a young Métis woman who finds a magical spoon that links her to a coven of witches.
  6. Thornhedge by T. Kingfisher — if anyone can make the Sleeping Beauty story interesting, it’s Kingfisher, and she has by turning this story on it’s head.
  7. Weyward by Emilia Hart — this multigenerational story of three women at very different periods in time who find their way to the same family-owned cottage to escape various circumstances and discover their true power.
  8. Maame by Jessica George — I loved this belated coming-of-age story about this Ghanaian woman in her 20s who is just starting to learn how to live her life for herself and find a balance between her family obligations and her own needs and wants.
  9. Speechless by Lindsey Lanza — this romance featuring an MC with a physical, chronic pain condition, and a LI with a mental health condition, and the most adorable service dog ever was so sweet and cute I fell in love with the story and the couple (and the dog).
  10. Shutter by Ramona Emerson — this is a mash-up of crime thriller and paranormal horror novel without being *too* scary, and has a Navajo MC and a Navajo author.

What are some of your favorite books with one-word titles?
