Top Ten Tuesday used to be a weekly post hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, but was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl. “It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.” This is definitely something I can understand and want to participate in.
Happy Halloween! This week we get a freebie, so I decided to talk about my favorite books featuring witches. It’s tough narrowing them down to just ten, so I’m going to limit myself to more recent reads, or this list will go on forever. Here’s some that I’ve read that really stand out:

- The Witching Tide by Margaret Meyer. This historical fiction is set during witch trials, and really gave some incredible insight, but also looks at who is really thought to be a witch and why.
- The Mystery at Dunvegan Castle by T.L. Huchu. I personally think this fun, snarky, and witty YA urban fantasy series is entirely underrated, featuring witches and an MC who is working her tail off to get certified as a legit practitioner.
- Hex and the City by Kate Johnson. I found this second book in the series to be even better than the first—cute, fast-paced, full of action and sizzling romance that leaps off the page.
- Hell Bent by Leigh Bardugo. While the characters aren’t witches per se, they come pretty close by seeing and communicating with ghosts, dabbling in occult magic, and trying to accomplish the impossible.
- The Witching Hour by Anne Rice. This is simultaneously a family saga about generations of witches, a romance, and a mystery. It’s gothic and dark, but it pulls me in every time.
- VenCo by Cherie Dimaline. Various witches drawn together by the appearance of a magic spoon … what’s not to love about this one, especially when we meet a young Indigenous character who is devoted to her elderly grandmother.
- Weyward by Emilia Hart. This was such a cool story of different generations of women, separated by periods of time and cultural change, yet dealing with similar issues.
- Witchful Thinking by Celestine Martin. I couldn’t help but love this lighthearted romance between a Black witch who loves the town she lives in, and a Black merman with a serious case of wanderlust.
- The Witch and the Tsar by Olesya Salnikova Gilmore. Baba Yaga is one of the ultimate representations of a witch, and this fascinating story places her in direct opposition to Ivan the Terrible.
- The Kiss Curse by Erin Sterling. I’m a total sucker for paranormal romance featuring a witch with a great coven to back her up and tell it like it is, and this book was funny, too!
What are your favorite books with witches in them?

I don’t tend to read witch novels or spooky books, so most I feature in a topic like this might be a stretch… but it’s still fun. 😉 Also I have see The Kiss Curse making the rounds. It’s a cute title.

It’s so weird, I love reading books with witches, but don’t like it when they get too spooky! But The Kiss Curse is a cute romance that doesn’t get scary at all.

I wanted to pick up Hell Bent for Halloween this year, but I read some reviews mentioned cliffhangers! (and that Darlington is still out of page time)… so waiting it out!

There’s definitely a cliffhanger ending, but Darlington gets some page time, at least. I’m pretty psyched for Bardugo’s upcoming book, The Familiar.

A great looking list. I’m on the library waiting list for Hex and the City. I’ve got many many weeks to go. I’m currently 15th in the queue 😂
Happy Halloween!

Thank you! I hope the waiting list goes quickly for you – I was lucky enough to get ARCs for both books in the series. They’re not sequential, but only loosely related, but they’re fun reading! I hope you had an awesome Halloween!

Fingers crossed – I will be honest and say that I have plenty of other books to read in the meantime 😂
Lucky! I do enjoy an ARC!
I did thank you – my mum did her annual Halloween tea (although it was on the Friday 😂). I hope you did too ☺️

This is a great list! I don’t think I’ve read TOO many books with witches in them, to be honest–I typically go more for the vampires/ghosts/demons type reads. OR I go for books that have magic, but not necessarily like…WITCHY magic, if that makes sense?
Happy Halloween to you! Here’s my TTT– https://betwixtthesepages.wordpress.com/2023/10/31/top-ten-tuesday-54/

That makes complete sense – I realized after making the list that I tend to read more books that have magic but not necessarily witches. But I do love a good book featuring witches. Happy Halloween!
