TTT – Mainstream Popular Authors That I Still Have Not Read

Top Ten Tuesday used to be a weekly post hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, but was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl. “It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.” This is definitely something I can understand and want to participate in.

This week’s topic was submitted by Rissa, and it’s mainstream popular authors that I still have not read. Whoo boy, get ready, because I feel like there are so many mainstream popular authors that I haven’t read yet. Here’s just a few:

  1. Jay Kristoff. Let’s start the list here, and this is an author I will never read because of his antisemitism, racism, fetishism of Asians, and just all around ickiness. And here’s my reminder to you—if you do read his books, please please please don’t post them on social media. I’m begging you.
  2. Agatha Christie. I just haven’t read any of her books. Not for any particular reason, just because I don’t know where to start.
  3. Haruki Murakami. I’ve come across his books, but they just haven’t caught my attention.
  4. Nicholas Sparks. His books just don’t appeal to me. Don’t worry, neither do his movies.
  5. Tessa Bailey. She’ll probably always be on this list. I tried reading one of her books once, but had to DNF after 2 chapters. As a Long Island native, I couldn’t listen to a book written by SOMEONE WHO LIVES HERE and apparently doesn’t know that no one who lives here ever calls Port Jefferson by its full name—it’s *always* Port Jeff. It was like nails on a chalkboard.
  6. Alice Oseman. I haven’t read the Heartstopper series because I couldn’t get my hands on it through the library, and now that I probably could, I just don’t have the time. The struggle is so real!
  7. Rebecca Yarros. I have Fourth Wing sitting and waiting for me to read as motivation to work through more of my overdue ARCs.
  8. Holly Jackson. It seems like everyone has read the A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder series except me, but it doesn’t seem like that’s going to change any time soon, since I’ve been moving away from YA books lately.
  9. Rebecca Ross. I’ve had more her on my TBR for an embarrassingly long time, and no excuse as to why.
  10. Louise Erdrich. I have one of her books sitting on my shelf and staring at me, so I have no good excuse for not reading any of her books.

  3. Oh wow, re: Jay Kristoff. I vaguely know of him, but nothing about him. Yikes!

    Agatha Christie’s books are a lot of fun if you’re into that era of mystery fiction (I am!). I didn’t know it’d be my thing, but I got started on The Murder of Roger Ackroyd due to a class I took at uni, and it was really good. Plus, she was a pharmacist and used her knowledge to make her mystery fiction convincing, which I love. I read a book about that by Kathryn Harkup (A is for Arsenic), and it gave me a whole new respect for Christie’s work.

    • Yeah, Jay Kristoff is a real piece of work if you look more into him.

      I do love mystery fiction, and never knew that Agatha Christie was a pharmacist! I’m definitely planning to look into her books and read one soon.

  4. Nicholas Sparks- his books don’t appeal to me either; started after watching some movies (all feel like the same story)

    I have read Agatha Christie and love her- well, maybe start with one of her best books (And Then There Was None or Murder on the Orient Express); reading her started as required reading for British Literature in 12th Grade- we were required to read “And Then There Was None”- final book of the year

  6. I’ve only read Kristof because I read Illuminae Files years ago. I had no idea. I used to enjoy Sparks’s books, but I’ve heard some not so great things about him as well.

    I TOTALLY GET BAILEY! I used to LOVE her books. Then she wrote that series about Westport, WA and added in a tropical storm and incorrect geography for Western, WA. I just couldn’t after that.

    Yarros is an author I love. I have read every one of her books and they’re all great.

    • Wow, I haven’t heard anything about Sparks, but at present, nothing surprises me about anyone.

      OMG I am so glad to find out that someone else can identify with how I feel about Bailey’s writing – it could be the best writing ever, but I just couldn’t get past that one thing and it completely ruined the story for me! I’m so excited to start Fourth Wing – it’s my motivation to get through my stack of ARCs, and then I’m going to reward myself with Fourth Wing.

    • I’m pretty active on Jewish Instagram, so I tend to hear about this kind of stuff pretty quickly.

      And I’ve discovered that way more people than I realized haven’t read any Agatha Christie, which makes me feel better, although I do plan on changing that sooner rather than later.

  11. I haven’t read most of these authors either. I’ve read at least one by Erdrich, but I don’t remember which one or what I thought of it. LOL. I’m not a huge Agatha Christie fan, but I have read several of her books. My favorite is AND THEN THERE WERE NONE. I think it’s her most well-known one, so I would start there.

    • I’ve heard that one is a great starting point, along with Murder on the Orient Express. And I seriously have been meaning to read something by Erdrich for so long and have absolutely no excuse for not reading one. Happy TTT (on Thursday lol).
