Top Ten Tuesday used to be a weekly post hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, but was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl. “It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.” This is definitely something I can understand and want to participate in.

Welcome to 2024! This week’s prompt is favorite books of 2023 and we aren’t getting a moment to breathe before jumping into best of posts. I’m still working through a few reviews I have to write, but I guess it won’t hurt to put those off until tomorrow, right?
There were a lot of really great books that I read in 2023, so it’s going to be difficult to cut it down to just ten, but I’m going to try my best. Here’s some of my favorite reads of last year:

- The City of Stardust by Georgia Summers. This was a magical, mysterious, and dreamlike story that I fell in love with. Goodreads | Amazon
- Dark Heir by C.S. Pacat. This sequel to Dark Rise did not disappoint, and I cannot wait for the next book to come out. Goodreads | Amazon
- Shield Maiden by Sharon Emmerichs. This gender-bent Beowulf story was an easy favorite of mine. Goodreads | Amazon
- The Combat Codes by Alexander Darwin. Man, just thinking about this book gets me amped all over again. That’s how good this book is. Goodreads | Amazon
- Hell Bent by Leigh Bardugo. We waited a long time for this book, and after reading it, I felt like the wait was completely justified. It was so exciting! Goodreads | Amazon
- Kantika by Elizabeth Graver. I was thrilled to get a story that was told through the Sephardic Jewish lens, since I haven’t seen as many, and there are a lot more stories from the Ashkenazi perspective. Goodreads | Amazon
- The Rebel King by Gina L. Maxwell. Nobody writes a spicy romance like Gina L. Maxwell, and I will die on that hill. Read this and debate me. Goodreads | Amazon
- The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker. I’ve wanted to read this for a long time, and it turned out to be one of my favorite reads of the year. Now to refresh and read the sequel. Goodreads | Amazon
- VenCo by Cherie Dimaline. I read this story early in the year and really enjoyed it. The connections between the women is what made it really stand out for me. Goodreads | Amazon
- Yours Truly by Abby Jimenez. This was the sweetest romance, and I loved the mental health representation that was worked into the story in the most beautiful and sensitive way, rather than having it be a liability or a sideline. Goodreads | Amazon
What were your favorite reads of the year? Did you read any of my faves? If so, what did you think?

I’ve seen so many good things about Abby’s books but never read one. I need to read more about them and see if they’d be books I’d enjoy. 🙂

Same! i’ve seen great things, but haven’t read one. I figured I’d give it a shot since it was for sale cheap on Pango Books, and then if I didn’t like it I could sell it again, but if I did like it, I just discovered a new favorite author, so win win!

I read The Golem and Jinni several years ago and really liked it. I think there is a sequel which I haven’t read. I could be wrong.

Happy New Year, Anne! There is a sequel to it, but I haven’t read it either. I’m going to have to get my hands on a copy, because I’m sure I’ll love it too.

Golem and Jinni – absolutely. I am still holding out on the Leigh Bardugo series, I need the third book out before I binge-read. Wish you a very happy new blogging year ’24, with lots of great reads ahead as well!

Thank you, and happy New Year to you! I can completely understand wanting to wait on the LB series, since there’s so long between books – the wait is killing me! Here’s to a fantastic blogging year and one full of 5 star reads.

I was surprised at how underrated it is! It turned me onto Cherie Dimaline’s writing, and it motivated me to buy Empire of Wild by her as well. Happy 2024 to you as well – here’s to many great reads and lots of great posts!

I’ve heard lots of good things about THE GOLEM AND THE JINNI. It’s not my genre, but I might have to give it a go just to see what all the buzz is about! Glad you found some great reads this year.
