Thank you to Orbit and Angela Man for sending me an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Cheesemaker Brie has the world’s worst luck in love, which is how she ends up falling for a lactose intolerant werewolf, in this raunchy, laugh-out-loud tale by the new star of rom-com fantasy.

Brie’s never been particularly coordinated…or lucky. Who else would throw a drink at someone’s head only to miss entirely and hit a stranger behind them? And who else would have that stranger fall madly in love with them because it turns out that the drink she threw was a love potion? Yeah, probably just Brie….

Running her cheese business and dealing with a pirate ship full of demons who just moved into town was hard enough. Now on top of it all, she has to convince a werewolf that she’s really not his fated mate. Though even she’s got to admit…having a gorgeous man show up and do all her chores while telling her she’s beautiful isn’t the worst thing to happen to a girl.

After reading the first book in this series, I thought I kind of knew what I was in for, and was fully prepared. A laugh-out-loud fantasy rom-com mashup that has just as much spice and humor, with heroines and love interests that I adored. However, I went into this a bit overconfidently, and was surprised, but I’ll get into that in a bit. Anyway, there was no way I’d miss out on a trad pub book with the word “yeeted” in it.

To start with, we get a cameo from Cinnamon and Fallon, who completely won my heart in the last book, so that was a pleasant surprise. We’re introduced to Brie, who is friends with Cinnamon, and is a cheesemaker with the worst luck ever. While trying to get a guy she is not interested in to finally leave her alone, she loses her temper and throws a drink at his head. Except, she misses and hits someone behind him. Who turns out to be a werewolf. And the drink turns out to be a love potion. So now the werewolf thinks he’s in love with her, and has the charm turned up to 11. And while she tries to convince him otherwise, his words and deeds are slowly starting to break down her resistance. So what’s a girl to do?

Let me start out by saying that I absolutely love Lemming’s writing. She has a wonderful style that makes it feel like the characters are just relaying a story informally, and the humor just feels so natural I couldn’t help but crack up. Her characters are amazing, and their banter is one of my favorite parts of the story. I especially enjoyed the way that Brie and Felix get to know each other, and how the quality of their interactions change over the course of the story.

Moving on to what I refer to as my … overconfidence. I have a bestie who is obsessed with paranormal and monster romance. I have heard about this stuff and live vicariously through her, since I don’t tend to read a ton of romance, and it’s kind of one of those things where I don’t have anything against it, but I just never read it because I didn’t even know where to start. Well, let me just say that now I’ve been initiated. I figured that with the inclusion of a werewolf, there would be some monster elements involved, but I honestly had no idea. Let’s just say that I expected one of the things that appeared in the spicy scenes which is standard in werewolf romance (as told to me by my bestie), but then tentacles appeared out of nowhere. I do need to say that I’m glad I didn’t know about that, because I might have really missed out. At first I was a little shocked, but then I literally turned into the kombucha meme:

There’s another two points that I want to make in this rambling hot mess of a review, before signing off. The first one is that Kimberly Lemming will always have my heart and respect for writing unapologetically curvy and voluptuous women who enjoy eating. I think that even in fantasy settings, it’s important to have realistic views of women, and Lemming does a fantastic job with that. The other point also echoes real life, and it is the topic of consent. Brie initially faces a man who consistently pursues her despite her repeated statements that she is not interested, so when she is presented with a man werewolf who is under the effects of a love potion, she insists on gaining his consent when he is clearheaded and can provide consent without being magically influenced. I love that Lemming took the time to remind readers that consent is sexy, and that both parties need to consent without being under the influence of a mind-altering substance.

So ultimately, this is a wonderful book, whether you choose to read it or listen to the audiobook, which I can confirm is also phenomenal. The combination of fantasy elements with just enough romance and comedy to keep this from feeling overly smutty makes this the perfect mainstream monster romance. If you’re looking for a short, fast-paced fluffy read featuring fated mates, plenty of humor, a magical sword with the best personality ever, and two characters you’ll be shipping in no time, this is the book for you. I may have rated this five stars, but I give it ten tentacles up!

    • It’s so amusing – it’s kind of a mixture of genres, and not overly heavy on the fantasy, but I highly recommend this series! There’s a spice farmer named Cinnamon, and then a cheese maker named Brie!

  1. This title is hilarious and perfect. For a second there, I thought you were sharing a deep, dark confession (or maybe a dream?) with your followers and was so curious to find out where you found both a love potion and a werewolf. Haha.

Nice job on your review. It kept me chuckling.
