Hey y’all, I hope you had a great week! I wanted to see how it goes if I add in a little weekly update, because I’ve noticed some other bloggers doing it and I really enjoy reading about their week in addition to the usual bookish content. Erin @ Still Life, With Cracker Crumbs and Becky @ Becky’s Book Blog are two bloggers I always try to visit to see their weekly updates. I especially like to travel vicariously through Becky, and see all the cool things that Erin does with her adorable son.
My week was a bit of a bust, but so far my weekend has made up for it. I was experiencing a strong side effect of a new medication added to my daily regimen, and was struggling to stay awake for more than a few hours each day. I tried cutting the pill in half, and it had no effect. So I decided that it wasn’t beneficial and was able to stop it. I’ll be meeting with the doctor again soon to discuss if there are other options available. Friday was a nice and relaxing day at home, with the exception of physical therapy. In case you don’t know, I have several autoimmune disorders and it’s taking a lot of fiddling to find the right medications that treat my symptoms and slow progression without adding in side effects and/or aggravating the other conditions. But I had an awesome day Saturday with my friend and her adorable dog.
Which brings me to the discussion topic for this week. We haven’t discussed book clubs yet, and I think it is a good topic to encourage some discourse. My own experience with book clubs is that I was always curious, but never found one nearby that featured the kind of books that I was interested in. I like to read diverse books and love learning something new when reading, and it’s pretty obvious that my preferred genre is fantasy. Buddy reading was something I liked to do, and during the pandemic I co-hosted a book club on Discord with two other women, and everyone was able to make suggestions based on what the specific month we were in was celebrating, allowing us to nominate diverse and consistently interesting books that sparked active discussions.
Drop a comment with your thoughts on book clubs, anything you might want to share about your week, or a link to a weekly update of your own!

I loved book clubs during the pandemic. A great way to connect with people remotely and because I live in rural Canada it was very accessible for me.
Now everything has gone back to in person I feel a bit isolated and out of the loop, when it comes to book clubs. I would love some recommendations for online book clubs please

I’m not sure about any, since we stopped hosting ours. But that sounds like such a great way for you to feel connected during the pandemic. I’m sorry things have gone back to the way they were before; I loved the remote connections that I built.

My day work is busy and very social, so at the end of the day I like nothing better than cozy up at home with a good book on my own!
Book clubs are an added connection for me and keep me motivated to read. I also found some good book recommendations that I wouldn’t have looked at 😀

That’s very true – I like that they push me out of my comfort zone to read something I might not normally have.

Public libraries often have online book clubs. There’s an international group via OverDrive which I read on my iPad https://www.togetherweread.com/

Based on my experience, I learned that it’s easier to have Book Clubs amongst Adults than Children and Teens because Adults are more likely to make time in their schedules to read the book and to participate in the Book Club (kids have school and other activities that take up their time). That being said, be ready for Book Club participants to not only read the entire book (each month), but also strongly voicing their thoughts about it at the Book Club Discussion. Book Clubs are also the chance to read books you wouldn’t consider otherwise, so it’s a chance to read something “different” from your “typical” reading.

Thanks for weighing in! I know you host book clubs at your job, and I think it’s awesome.

It’s a fun part of the job. I only wish I could get more patrons to participate in them.

If I was closer I’d come!

Some of them are virtual and/or hybrid! You should look into which public libraries close to you offer!

I’m going to have to check that out! Thanks for the heads up.

I haven’t been part of a book club so far but if I find one nearby or even virtual that matches my taste I sure would join one.

You should give it a shot if the chance comes up!

Hi Leah, I have attended several book clubs over the years, for different reasons. Some only read crime, some only literary novels, and others a general mixture of popular books which I enjoy the most. It is always fascinating to listen to someone else’s thoughts and opinions. It also gets me reading a book I might not have considered. With regard to venue, I have met with book groups in libraries, cafes, private homes and currently with U3A members. There’s always coffee and cake afterwards! 📚 G.

That sounds really awesome! I do love the thoughts and impressions that another person gets on a book as well – that’s what makes buddy reads so appealing to me. Although I might be tempted by coffee and cake!
