Top Ten Tuesday

TTT – My Favorite Bookish Memes

Top Ten Tuesday used to be a weekly post hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, but was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl. “It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.” This is definitely something I can understand and want to participate in.

Today’s prompt was scheduled as things characters have said. While reading, character statements are wonderful, but I never remember the quotes once I’ve finished reading. I’ve never been drawn to copying down quotes, but maybe I should start? Instead, I want to flip things around and do a different topic. This week, I’m going to try my hardest to find 10 bookish memes or gifs that I can relate to on a cellular level.

I love this gif, and try to squeeze it into every text exchange that I can. It comes in handy when I make a bookish recommendation and then send this to them.

I have been a fast reader for all of my life, and I never understand when people express surprise that I binge read a book, while they don’t have any surprise when someone else binge watches a season of a show or a trilogy of movies. Besides, what are books for anyway?

Actual footage of me running home to … put my book on the shelf and ignore it for anywhere between 2-10 years, approximately.

The struggle is so real with finding the perfect man in a book, and then finishing the book and the character doesn’t come to life for my romance.

Every reader that I know has expressed a wish for some variation of this statement. I’m still hoping my dream will come true.

You know when you’re settled in to read for a little bit before bed, and think you’re going to relax only to discover that the author put in a major plot twist and be forced to read until the wee hours of the morning.

There is literally nothing worse than spending a significant amount of time reading a book only to have the ending not live up to reasonable expectations.

This one always makes me laugh. It’s probably so funny to me because it’s true. There are books piled on most surfaces in my room, and Marie Kondo would be horrified. BUT THEY BRING ME JOY MARIE!

This is the struggle right here. If I read a hardcover, I can’t read it laying down. If I read a paperback, it’s guaranteed to get water on it somehow. If I read on my kindle, I miss the sensations associated with reading a book—the feel of a book in my hands, the smell of the pages—but it hurts a lot less to hit myself in the face with a kindle than it does with a doorstopper of a book.

I was recently explaining this game to my mom, in the context of when the GPS gives me a set time to arrive, and I always strive to beat the clock. But it also comes into play when I check the estimated time to finish the book on my kindle, and I always race to beat the clock.

This is probably my most used gif, especially because it comes in handy for so many situations, like when I’m reading a book and the storyline is so predictable from a mile away.

I couldn’t help but love this topic idea, and I’m so glad I decided to challenge myself. In fact, I even found an 11th one to share, apropos of nothing, just because I love it.

What’s your favorite meme or gif to use in bookish situations?

  1. This is super fun! 🙂 I have never been a speed or fast reader but sometimes I wish I were. As an adult I have come to “deal” with the fact that I won’t be and it’s ok. 🙂

    • Haha, it wasn’t nearly as cool when I read armfuls of books at the library each week and no one would play Nintendo jeopardy with me because I’d be answering before they got to reading the third word of the clue.

    • Quotes always fly right out of my head, and I never even highlight them in my Kindle. But a meme or gif? I can always find one that applies. Glad you liked my spin on the topic.

  2. At the beginning of the year I was wanting to track all types of things so I’d have them available for top ten posts. That quickly made reading a chore so I’ve already stopped. I really like the GIF/meme idea! Interesting thought on binging books versus shows. I’ll have to watch what I say to binge readers from now on. I don’t try to beat the estimated read time on my Kindle but I use it to figure out how late I need to stay up. These are all great!

    • That always seems like such a good idea, but then it never works for me in practice. But sometimes a gif or meme just fits so perfectly, and I had so much fun with this prompt.
