Sunday Bookish Discussion — Mid-Series Cover Changes

Mom came back home last Sunday afternoon, and it is wonderful to have her back home. The best part is that she got scared and is resting and elevating her legs. Mom may not to have gotten a traditional family seder, but yesterday I made chicken soup and gefilte fish and defrosted a nice piece of beef, and today I’ll be making matzah balls and preparing the meat with potatoes and carrots, then letting it slow cook until dinner time. I hope you enjoy the remaining day of Passover if you are Jewish, Easter if you practice, or just have a great dinner if you don’t celebrate either holiday.

Today’s topic came to me when we were discussing how we like to keep our bookshelves organized, and I think this is one that is going to inspire a lot of conversation. Today I’m going to be asking you for feedback on how you feel about mid-series cover changes. I’ll be challenging myself to both viewpoints, even though I tend to lean pretty hard towards one. Can you guess whether I’m team pro or team con?

For team pro, I’ve seen some mid-series cover changes that take a cover from just okay to wow. It might be what comes along with an independently published book being republished under a traditional publisher, or it can take a plain cover and bring it to a level where eyes can’t help but snag.

For team con, I’ve seen some mid-series cover changes that aren’t as nice as the one that they’re replacing (*cough* ACOTAR *cough*). A lot of readers have complained that it feels like a money grab, especially when the book sizes change mid-series. And if the book cover doesn’t change for the better, it feels even more like a money grab.

And for those who are fixated on having a cover look a certain way, there are actually people who can create dust jackets based on what you want them to look like. I’ve seen some that look better than the original or the change.

What do you think of mid-series cover changes? Team pro or team con? Can you guess which I am?

  1. I am not a fan of cover changes, unless the books are being re-released. I have actually purchased a book that I already had because the cover was different and I didn’t realize it was the same book.

    • Yes! I’ve done that too, with The Pillars of the Earth – there was an original cover and then a movie tie-in cover and I accidentally bought both thinking I had scored a great deal on the second book. Until I got home 🤣

  2. I’m glad your mom is resting. I just ate breakfast and all the food talk is making me hungry. LOL In general I don’t like it but if the spine stays similar so it looks nice on the bookshelf together, then I’m not going to be that upset. However, if the spine is totally different or the size of the book has changed then I don’t like that at all.

    • It really just feels like a greedy move by publishers to change the covers mid-series, since there are some people who have to have everything matching. Can you tell that I’m not a fan either?
