TTT – Non-Bookish Hobbies

Top Ten Tuesday used to be a weekly post hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, but was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl. “It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.” This is definitely something I can understand and want to participate in.

This week’s prompt is about my non-bookish hobbies. I post a lot about the books I read, but I figure that it’s time for you guys to get to know who I am outside of books. So here are my top ten hobbies outside of reading:

  1. I absolutely love cooking. And feeding people, but I lump that right in with cooking. Baking isn’t really my strong point, but I happen to be pretty good at cooking, and I create my own healthy recipes.
  2. I am a total dog person. I have a bunch of dogs that I treat like my babies (mostly because they are, and I don’t actually plan on having any two-legged children). I also love other people’s dogs.
  3. Crocheting is another hobby of mine. I enjoy making gifts for people, and I feel like creating handmade items for my family and friends gives it a personalized touch that I can’t quite duplicate by purchasing a present at a store.
  4. I have loved swimming since I was a little kid, and I go swimming any time I can. Unfortunately, I don’t have a pool of my own, so I don’t get to swim as often as I like.
  5. Making lists. It may sound weird, but I love making lists. It makes me feel like I am getting organized, and checking things off my list gives me a sense of accomplishment.
  6. Learning is another thing I love to do. When I was little, if I asked my mom questions, she’d tell me to look it up. This was way back in the olden days before the internet (haha, but seriously). Now, it’s become a habit of mine, so when I come across something I don’t know, I look it up. However, I use the internet, which makes information much easier.
  7. I love to travel. Unfortunately, I don’t get to do it nearly as much as I would like to, and not at all with the pandemic. Ultimately, I’d like to travel to many more places, both within the US and around the world, but every little bit counts!
  8. Listening to music. What better feeling is there than rocking out to some good music? OK, well there are better feelings, but music ranks high up on the list. Going to concerts is another favorite.
  9. Spending time with friends and family. I have some really awesome family members that can make me laugh and know me better than anyone in the world. My friends are the most incredible people in the world, and I consider them the family that I get to choose.
  10. Helping others. I specifically chose to go into a helping profession, as a mental health counselor. There’s something that makes me feel really good about doing something nice for others, and I think that helping other people, especially those who are most in need of support and help, is probably the best thing that I can do.

What are some things that you like to do other than reading?

  1. Thank you for sharing Leah! I share the same passion for making lists with checkboxes especially… it makes me feel more in control but I’m horrible at adhering to them. 😂

    • Thank you, and it’s so awesome to find people with similar interests! I recently tried making scones for the first time and learned (the hard way, of course) what happens when you overwork dough. I’m so jealous of people who can bake, but I am so glad I can cook and enjoy it.

  2. Great TTT. We have quite a few in common… I love making lists. I might be addicted, honestly. I make a list and then go to my planner and make another list in there. 😂 I love that you put spending time with your family in there. I think it is wonderful that you have an awesome family as you described. ❤️ I also put spending time with family in my TTT; I wasn’t sure if it was considered a hobby, but I decided to put it in anyway! Glad I am not the only one. 😊

    • My nephews and I are only a few years apart, so we grew up together, and they’re basically my best friends now. We don’t live near each other, but when we get together we always have so much fun! I definitely consider it a hobby!

  3. HOORAY for a fellowing cooking person! Everyone up in here seems to be baking and I’m like “… I can cook?” Haha. Do you have a favorite thing you like to cook? I love making black bean and corn salsa recipe because it involves chopping a LOT of green peppers, tomatoes, onions, avocado… I like the cutting things up and mixing parts of cooking best, haha. And tasting!!

I crochet a little bit – I need to make a whole mess of pot scrubbies for my Mom for Christmas, so I should probably get started on that! I tried making an amigurumi penguin last winter but got stuck on a part of the pattern and sort of abandoned it. Oops. Maybe I can finish it this year!

My post is here if you’d like to pop by! https://elleyotter.com/2020/11/03/ttt-non-bookish-hobbies/ 🙂

    • I love making stir fries or one pot recipes whenever possible, but I usually prefer making Latin-inspired dishes. I’ve been trying my hand at Indian dishes lately and absolutely loving it! And I tend to make blankets, coasters, face scrubbies, barrettes, and even some beer cozies as gifts, which have gone over very well. I’ve never tried amigurumi but might give it a shot.

  4. Great list, Leah! I think we’d get on even outside of our bookish twinning! 😉 I love cooking, doggos and swimming too! The more I see crocheting being mentioned as something people love to do, the more I want to give it a try! Gonna need to take a look and see if it’s even possible to do here 😂

    • I would love to hang with you – I definitely think we’d get along! Crochet is something I taught myself, although I can’t learn how to knit for the life of me. My aunt even tried to teach me and I still couldn’t do it 😂 I’m sure you could learn to crochet. It couldn’t hurt to try!

  5. I love music too, and hanging out with my friends. I’m also a big fan of travel, my aim is to have visited at least one country on every continent (maybe barring Antarctica, far too cold!), though the pandemic might have set me back a little on that plan: so far I’ve done Europe, North America (I mean only a few states in the US, but that is one country!), and Africa (I went to South Africa at the beginning of the year). So I still have to to go to Australia, Asia and South America and there’s still places I’d like to go in Europe and definitely more I want to see in Africa. The US on it’s own is so huge that there’s a lot more I want to see there and I’d really like to visit Canada as well. Basically I want to go everywhere, though I’d need a lot more money to do that!

    • I’ve been to some states in the US (since I live here), Canada, Central America, and the Middle East, but I definitely want to travel more. I’d love to go to every continent at least once! There’s so much to see and experience!

      • I’ve only really done the coasts of the US, and even then, your country is so huge that there’s so much more to see even there. I think next time I’d really like to visit Boston, I love history and it seems like a good place to go for that. Yeah there’s really more out there than one person can ever experience in a lifetime, but I’m going to try!

      • Me too! I’ve only really driven down the East coast, traveled parts of NY (where I live), been to Vegas and briefly LA, Minnesota, and visited Hawaii when my nephew lived there. But I’d love to see more of the US. It’s such a huge place with so much to see!

      • I definitely get that! The UK is a lot smaller but there are still lots of places here that I haven’t visited but would like to. Hopefully I might get back to the US again when this whole thing is over and we’re able to travel properly again, the last time I went was in 2012!

      • I do too! There are lots of amazing places here. I definitely recommend Bath if you like historic stuff, I went on a trip there with my friends a few years ago, the buildings are beautiful and there’s a lot of great Roman archaeological sites through the city (the Roman Baths are amazing!).

  6. Now that you’ve mentioned it – I actually also love learning. I have always been an eager students and I love books where you learn new things. Not that big on non-fiction. But luckily there are always enough books for all tastes and sizes.

I love baking, but not cooking all that much….

Good to get to know you a bit better! Here’s my The Collected Works of Elza Reads

  7. Mental health counseling is such an amazing profession! I am so lucky to have had a good therapist to help me through this year.

I second the music and travel love. I love creating playlists, and this year, I’ve put together eight different mental health lists (including an album my therapist recommended).

And yaaaas, I am dreaming of visiting ALL THE PLACES when it’s safe. 🌴
