I’ve really missed doing Friday Favorites, and since no one was currently hosting it, Cait @ Functionally Fictional decided to jump into the gap. Each week, she provides a prompt, and I get to talk about my favorite books that fit the topic. Feel free to join in – the more the merrier!
This week’s prompt is mystery books, and I can’t be more excited about it! I happen to love mystery books, and find myself reading more of them in fall and winter. Here are some of my favorites:

- The Unmaking of June Farrow by Adrienne Young. This book absolutely blew my mind in the best way. It was a little confusing at first, but everything is explained by the end.
- None Shall Sleep by Ellie Marney. My friend suggested this book to me, and it was incredible. It’s about two teenagers who are recruited for a special task in the FBI and it had me hooked.
- Murder at the Beacon Bakeshop by Darci Hannah. This starts a cozy mystery series that I absolutely adore, featuring a Michigan bakery in a lighthouse, an adorable Newfoundland, and a handsome but mysterious neighbor.
- Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn. This is such a dark and twisted story, and I loved every second of it. Shoutout to the TV adaptation as well, since that’s really good.
- The Secret, Book, and Scone Society by Ellery Adams. I fell in love with this cozy mystery series featuring four women who form a book club that develops into a group of supportive friends who share their secrets and solve murders.
- All the Dangerous Things by Stacy Willingham. This story about a kidnapped toddler kept surprising me with all the twists and turns, and put me onto a new favorite mystery author.
- The Searcher by Tana French. A dark story about a retired detective who moves to Ireland, but is quickly roped in by a local kid to help find their missing brother. Full of twists and turns, and some characters I couldn’t help but love.
- Ten Years Gone by Jonathan Dunsky. I was contacted by this author to review this book, and I was quickly hook and found myself reading the entire series in short order. This is a historical mystery series not to miss.
- Shutter by Ramona Emerson. This is a mystery about a Navajo woman who works as a crime scene photographer, but also has contact with the dead, who harass her and demand that she help to solve their own murders.
- Triptych by Karin Slaughter. This book kicks off the Will Trent series, which is my favorite Slaughter series. She writes dark, gory, and gruesome books, but I love the characters and how they work to solve these horrific crimes.
What are some of your favorite mystery books?

If you try:
Suggest you start with either “And Then There Was None” or “Murder on the Orient Express”
Those are her best works. I even saw her play, The Mousetrap, at a local theater in St. Louis

The play sounds awesome! I’ll have to check one of those books out. Thanks for the tip.
