State of the ARC is a monthly meme temporarily hosted by Sarah at All The Book Blog Names Are Taken meant to motivate you to finish up your long overdue ARCs (Advanced or Early Reader Copies). This is its original intention, while some bloggers have tweaked it a bit for their own purposes, such as just keeping ARCs in order by due dates. Or you can just be a hot mess like me who sometimes misses publishing dates (or ignores them altogether) and needs a way to stay organized on what has been read, reviewed, or is still begging for attention. Thank you to Evelina @ Avalinah’s Books for coming up with this super helpful monthly meme.
I finished May with 17 ARCs left to be read.
I was originally planning to make some serious progress on my ARCs in June, but things got super busy in June. I ended up going to two fairs with friends, went to my nephew’s high school graduation, and didn’t spend nearly as much time reading ebooks as I would have liked. I am still struggling with difficulty focusing on my ebooks and printed books, so I’m still relying on audiobooks, and don’t have nearly enough audiobook ARCs. Also, I’ve completely failed at slowing down/stopping my new requests, but I can’t take responsibility for that since some of my favorite authors are coming out with new books and I couldn’t resist requesting them. I even got approved for some! Now I’ll have to seriously work on reading my NG ARCs next month. Because of all the approvals racking up, my current ratio has gone down to 92%, which still isn’t bad, but I’d like to see it go up next month.
I got approved for 10 new books in June:

- The Spirit Bares Its Teeth by Andrew Joseph White
- The Mystery at Dunvegan Castle by T.L. Huchu
- Bye, Baby by Carola Lovering
- The Heiress by Rachel Hawkins
- The Reformatory by Tananarive Due
- After That Night by Karin Slaughter
- The Kitchen Witch Handbook by Aurora Kane
- Spoon to be Dead by Dana Mentink
- Where the Dead Sleep by Joshua Moehling

These are the ARCs that I read and reviewed, with links to my reviews:

Ah! I’m waiting for the audio of the Heiress. I have a real love/hate relationship with the author. I have Gone Tonight but have too many July books to get through for an August one, now lol. This is a great list, though. Lots to look forward to.

I’ve pretty consistently liked her books, so I think it’s safe to say I’ll like this one too. And I’m so excited about this lineup! I’m excited to see your reviews when they’re all written up.

Thank you! I always look for yours, too. There are a couple we’ve differed on (What the neighbors’s saw, for instance), but mostly you and I line up well. Why haven’t we done a thriller buddy read? I don’t have anyone to buddy-read thrillers with.

We do tend to have similar taste in thrillers most of the time, and even when our tastes differ, I still love reading your reviews. I also don’t have anyone to buddy read thrillers with, and think we should definitely do this! I have no idea why we haven’t done this before.

I’m still waiting to see whether or not I will receive a galley of “A Study in Drowning.”
Also, to me, Andrew Joseph White is an author who won’t get the recognition he deserves until readers comprehend the “cautionary tales” he’s weaving into his (YA) books. I’m looking forward to reading his upcoming book.

Ooooh, I hope you get A Study in Drowning! I’m really excited about both that one and the White book – his last book was incredible, and I’m sure this one will be too. When I read his debut, it seemed like a dystopic story, but this time around it seems more like a reality for the very near future.

I know of a few librarians who complained that the book was “too gory,” which took away from the premise of the message of the book overall (something they all comprehended).
