Top Ten Tuesday

TTT – Books With Stormy Covers

Top Ten Tuesday used to be a weekly post hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, but was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl. “It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.” This is definitely something I can understand and want to participate in.

Hello everyone! I am back at home and settling into my usual routine, but I couldn’t resist today’s prompt, books to read during a storm, which came from Astilbe @ Long and Short Reviews. This topic is intentionally broad – they can be cozy or comfort reads, books with storms in them, atmospheric reads for dark and stormy nights, light reads to combat the heavy weather, etc.) It’s tough to pick just one subtopic since I love storms, but I’m going to list ten of my favorite reads with stormy weather featured or with a storm on the cover:

  1. The Witching Hour by Anne Rice. This one is an easy pick, because it has a lightning storm on the cover and I read this series every so often. My original copy is duct taped together from carrying it around for so long.
  2. Weather Girl by Rachel Lynn Solomon. With a cover this cute, and a story that has wonderful Jewish representation plus a fat (actually written positively) single dad and a news station, I couldn’t help but love it.
  3. Unnatural Exposure by Patricia Cornwell. I have always enjoyed seeing how Dr. Scarpetta solves different crimes, and this book has snow on the cover as well as at least one scene set in bad weather, if I’m not mistaken.
  4. The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden. There was no way this book full of dark, long, freezing, and snowy Russian winter nights wasn’t making this list. I had to include it, and love the story so much.
  5. The Lies of Alma Blackwell by Amanda Glaze. A book with stormy seas full of whitecaps on the cover is one that always catches my attention, which is how this fantastic book wound up on my shelves.
  6. The Frozen River by Ariel Lawson. With a path and evergreens covered in snow, and an increasingly stormy historical fiction plot, this was a fantastic winter read for me. Or even a great read for those super hot days of summer where I’m wishing for snow.
  7. Daughter of Mine by Megan Miranda. This foggy cover made me think of how much I enjoy reading mysteries set in bad weather, and while this doesn’t have rain or snow storms on the cover, it was a great book that gave me foggy chilly night vibes.
  8. Village in the Dark by Iris Yamashita. Although there isn’t exactly a ‘storm’ on the cover, the presence of the aurora borealis and the remote Alaskan setting makes this a perfect read for winter.
  9. Madhouse at the End of the Earth: The Belgica’s Dark Journey into the Dark Antarctic Night by Julian Sancton. Whenever I come across a nonfiction book that reads like a fiction story, I’m always quick to share it on my favorites. This book about a doomed journey to the South Pole that was beset by obstacles, and the cover featuring an ice-bound boat makes me want to cuddle up under a blanket.
  10. The Diamond Eye by Kate Quinn. Seeing either version of this cover immediately makes me want to cuddle up under a soft and fuzzy blanket, preferably right outside of the dryer. I haven’t read it yet, but hopefully that’ll change this winter.

Have you read any of these? What are your favorite books featuring storms on the cover?

  1. My copy of the Witching Hour completely fell apart too from reading it so much!!! Lol. I recently had to buy a new copy. My husband and I (boyfriend at the time) and I took a trip to New Orleans specifically because of my love for these books and of course I had to have my picture taken in front of Anne Rice’s house.

I have The Frozen River on my TBR! I am glad to hear that you liked it!!

    • Another thing we have in common! I haven’t made my way to New Orleans yet, but am going to have to after how many times I’ve read that book and dreamed about visiting! I hope you like The Frozen River as much as I did, and think you will.

  2. I love the cover for Frozen River. I don’t know much about it, but I kind of want to read it based on the cover alone. lol I’m glad you like it and maybe I should read it this winter.

    • I’m the same way with books I own too – like, ‘nope, not gonna read it, just bought it to grace my shelf and give me feelings of guilt.’

I’ll be sure to check out your post and leave a comment – better late than never!
